USTGS-CCCPET conducts cultural heritage mapping project for Calatagan, Batangas

The Calatagan Cultural Heritage Mapping Project was conducted in Calatagan, Batangas initiated by the Enrique Zobel Foundation in cooperation with Department of Education (DepEd) and University of Santo Tomas Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and the Environment in the Tropics (USTGS CCCPET).

Fifty-seven (57) public school elementary and high school teachers were tasked to conduct the massive barangay-level survey of heritage resources that covered 25 barangays from May to June 2015. The Calatagan Cultural Heritage Mapping project was conceived by Ms. Dedes Zobel to profile the rich cultural heritage resources of the town. Significant information, especially in the area of intangible and built heritage was documented and uncovered.

The highlight of the activity was the discovery of an old fortication in Brgy. Lucsuhin and revival of Modanza, a traditional song and dance repertoire in Brgy. Poblacion.

Through the baseline data gathered, it was envisioned to identify cultural industries for the people to gain meaningful livelihood.

The project was featured in Philippine Daily Inquirer last October 19, 2015.
